Truly Clarifying On Nature Of TIPS, Yield & Auctions
Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2025A truly help, precise clarification on the nature of bonds, yield, duration, tenors, principal, and coupon rate of both TIPS and nominal bonds.
I must recognize Harry Sit as the first author to actually illustrate the functionality of the Treasury auction, means of agreeing on the yield of Primary Dealers, and calculations related to tax filing.
This stands as a top treatment of bonds available today.

Not for the faint of heart
Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2024This is a comprehensive book not for the casual investor in my opinion. It goes into more depth than I was expecting but then TIPS are not simple investments if you really want to get into the nitty-gritty. That was my only fault with it. For a beginning investor, it's kind of much.

A solid overview of TIPS
Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2010I've been a professional quantitative analyst and portfolio manager on the stock side for 20 years. I wanted to learn more about TIPS. This book fits the bill nicely. It walks you through the rewards and risks of owning TIPS. It also gives you all the nuts-and-bolts details that you need to implement a TIPS purchase or sale, including consideration of where to buy them and the associated trading costs. While you could get these details on your own, this book saves you a lot of time and effort.
If there is a second edition, it would be interesting to add a discussion of TIPS returns over time and the factors responsible for those returns. In other words, when TIPS have done exceptionally well (or poorly), what were the driving factors.
The book is well written and a good value for those who are new to TIPS. In the interest of full disclosure, I don't know the author.

Very useful to getting me into TIPS
Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2024This book is written in a style I wish more books were written. Practical and with the intent of being applied by the purchaser. No fluff in this book. Got me started in TIPS during the > 2% yield days of the 2020's.
Would be even better if it showed how to build a TIPS ladder in a taxable account.
Only issue I have with the book is that it's written in 2010. I needs an update.

Great book to understand TIPS.
Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2018This was a great book! It helped me understand Bonds and TIPS a lot better. It actually covers how to obtain from auction and on the second hand market. Its around 120 pages. If you are looking to diversify into Bonds I recommend this book.

Good, but urgently needs to be updated.
Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2025This book is dated 2010. Much has happened with regard to inflation and TIPS since then. Its examples from years prior to 2010 really are missing what happened in the post covid inflationary period. The author seems to equate individual TIPS being just as good as TIPS funds. He doesn't mention how bond ETFs and funds in general can have their NAVs decimated in a high interest rate environment like what happened in 2022. Otherwise, it's a decent explanation of the nuts and bolts of TIPS. I'd love to give it 2.5 stars for this reason, but I'll round it up to 3.

re: very helpful when I bought it
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2011I bought this book early 2011. While reading I decided on a fairly large purchase of TIPS (large for me) based on my readings (plus other sources). Well, long story short, yields now are down to literally nothing. That means, the price of the TIPS have gone way up. I have sold more than 1/2 of what I bought in January at a rather large profit %.
I wish there was a follow up to this to advise in a low/no interest rate environment. The "easy" money was made. Now TIPS becomes a harder buy (especially longer term TIPS).
