- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2014I bought this cable modem because I did not want to be a victim of Time Warner Cable's leased modems. This is my first time being a Time Warner Cable customer, and during installation, I handed this modem over to the cable guy (who looked a bit disappointed that I had my own modem, for some reason), who set up everything without a hitch by calling Time Warner Cable and giving them the HSC MAC ID. For those of you who want to buy this modem to replace TWC's leased modems, just call them and give them the HSC MAC ID, and they'll activate it for you (you might have to reset the modem after activation to get things going).
Anyways, moving on to function and reliability, this modem is great! The speed of the internet plan I pay for is 15 Mbps (there is a difference between MB/s and Mbps, as 8 Mb = 1 MB), and after doing a speed test at speedtest.net, my ping is 9-11 ms, and my download speed ranged from 14-16 Mbps (usually 16 Mbps), which is great. So far, there hasn't been any bumps in the road, and I haven't experienced any downtime in connectivity or anything.
On a somewhat related note, I also purchased a router because I wanted WiFi as well, seeing that I have tablets, smartphones, and game consoles in the house. The router I'm using is a "Factory Refurbished NETGEAR WNDR3400 N600 Wireless-N Dual Band Router" (I literally copied the title and pasted it here). Since it's refurbished, no CD came in the box, so I just connected the router to the modem, and connected the router to my computer (with an Ethernet cable, not through WiFi). Internet didn't work at first, but I assume there was some automatic setup processing somewhere (probably something to do with assigning an IP address or something) because eventually internet access returned within a few minutes. I then went to http://192.68.1.1 (default username: admin, default password: password), and set everything up, and soon had working WiFi within 15 minutes. Despite being refurbished, this router works like it's new.
In short, this modem is working properly, has a stable connection to the Internet, and is giving me the speeds that I paid for (which is all that I ask for). It also works well with the "Factory Refurbished NETGEAR WNDR3400 N600 Wireless-N Dual Band Router," which is easy to set up if you have basic knowledge of setting up networks, configuring IP address, etc.
Edit (11/13/14): It's been about 3 and 1/2 months since I've been using this modem, and I've had zero problems with it so far. In this span of time, I've only had to restart the modem once (internet outage), and everything was fine after that. Not sure what caused the internet to go wonky, but I highly doubt this will be anything to worry about.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2013I've known for a while that Motorola makes some of the best cable modems, but I've never actually owned one. I based my decision to buy this product based on that knowledge, and also like many of you, on the many positive reviews here on Amazon.
I am with Comcast in Chicago, IL. This modem was super easy to setup and recognized automatically by Comcasts network. Just plug the modem in, open your browser, and a page will appear saying new modem detected, press to continue setup. And that's it.
How is the performance of the Motorola Surfboard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0? I have 25 mbps connection with Comcast. Prior to buying this (using Comcasts Scientific Atlanta rental modem) the max speed that I would see for downloads was around 2.4 Mbps. During peak usage times speeds would be lower, and also I would sometime have problems with streaming video on Youtube and various other sites. After getting this modem (which has 8 channels instead of your rental modems 1 channel) up and running, I was able to see actual download speeds of up to 3.2 Mbps, with steady speeds at 3.0 Mpbs, and never any stalling with any streaming video, even during the heaviest usage times of the day. That's a nice performance increase (20-25%) without even changing my internet speeds, and now I'm saving $7 a month off my bill from their rental fee. I really think allowing yourself to utilize any of 8 channels makes a big difference during heavy use times when that one channel you're on with an older tech modem is being heavily shared by others in your neighborhood on the same hub.
And the cool thing is that since this is 8 channel DOCSIS 3.0 modem, if I ever do decide to up my speeds (or Comcast continues to keep doubling speeds on the same package) to the available 50mbps, or 105mbps (and soon to come 300mbps in my area) I don't have to buy a new modem. I'm all set. Future proof.
Update 10/30/13: Just wanted to say that since my purchase I've spilled an entire cup of coffee directly on this modem, which went inside the heat vents completely soaking the electronics inside. The modem lights went out. I thought for sure it was fried and I'd have to be ordering another one. I unplugged the modem, went to work in a bad mood, and came home 8 hours later. Figuring what do I have to lose, I plugged the modem back in, and to my surprise, all the lights came back on. I thought to myself okay well lights is one thing, but do I actually have an internet connection. I load my browser and lone and behold, I have internet. This thing took an entire cup of coffee directly inside it's heat vents and 8 hours later after drying it works like brand new. A testament to the quality of Motorola's Surfboards. Amazing.
Get this modem. You will be happy.

My old Rogers modem was crapping out, rebooting under stress of high use, giving me the opportunity to switch to Teksavvy.
After some research I decided the best modems a) are not bundled with wifi routers and b) are Motorola. So I got this one, and it works great.
It has 8-band support, as opposed to the 4-band support most of the other ones have, even though those speeds are generally unaffordable at this time, I love a good future proof value proposition.

Plug and Play, worked perfectly with my service provider. I've had it for a while now and never any trouble. Very fast.

Does the job, was a required upgrade from my ISP for DOCSIS 3.0. Don't notice much difference from my old Motorola (yet) to be honest. Hoping for better VOIP quality. Can only be as good as the cable line feeding it.
KristenReviewed in Canada on March 3, 20155.0 out of 5 stars This has worked out great for me
This has worked out great for me. I was wanting a replacement for my old modem and this worked out perfectly. I have my internet through Teksavvy and this modem is compatible with them so I was finally able to increase my internet speed. It's small and it looks nice too.
Bruce FrazerReviewed in Canada on May 5, 20155.0 out of 5 stars Perfect.
It's tough enough in Canada to find a really top quality modem that is not a rental from an ISP. This things FLIES. Seriously reliable, takes advantage of ALL bandwidth and never lets me down. Connects to ISP on boot in 15 seconds. Perfect.
